New Arrivals: Vintage Art

Just like vintage furniture and accessories, vintage and one-of-a-kind artwork adds a very personal touch and an element of surprise to your home (see our past blogs). We love how Weisshouse owner, Stacy Weiss created a wall collage of new and vintage art in her loft. See the photo below for details (top photo). However, you don't have to have live in a loft with 13 foot ceilings to achieve a similar look. Check out photographer, Adam Milliron's take on mixing vintage accessories and art together on a modern credenza (second from top photo). No matter what your style or taste, you can create a warm, interesting, well-traveled look too. Be sure to browse the remaining photos and explore some our new vintage and one-of-a-kind art. Don't forget to visit our website at www.weisshouse.com. We are constantly updating it with new products.

A Few of Our Favorite Rooms

As we say goodbye to 2012 and hello to 2013, we wanted to take some time to revisit a few stunning room scenes posted by Elle Decor on their Facebook page. Elle Decor is one of our favorite design magazines. It's always full of lush photographs and engaging articles that make you want to drop what you're doing and go shopping! We love the idea of recreating rooms from magazines with a personal touch. As you are thinking about the new year and how you would like to spruce up your home, we encourage you to page through YOUR favorite design magazines and pull out images that inspire you. Bring your ideas to Weisshouse and one of our designers will help you realize them. Visit our website at www.weisshouse.com to browse our products and projects.

The History of Bernhardt Furniture

More often than not, the buyers at Weisshouse stumble upon great vintage finds that are highlighted on our website and sold in our Pittsburgh showroom. These "finds" come from all over the world. Lately though, there has been a steady, growing interest in American-made vintage furniture from the 1950s and 1960s. One of our newest acquisitions, a vintage desk and chair made by Bernhardt Furniture Company in the mid 1950s inspired a little stroll down memory lane.

Founded in 1889 by John M. Bernhardt, the Bernhardt furniture company has long been equated with stylish, well-made furniture. Way back then, John Bernhardt saw and acted upon the opportunities around him. First, he started his own sawmill and began buying timber. Then in 1889 he organized a company to manufacture furniture out of the native white oak. Bernhardt’s vision ultimately led him to connect with distributors and merchants in large cities such as Chicago and New York City in order to supply sturdy oak bedroom furniture to people who lived as far away as the Rocky Mountains. This eager North Carolina entrepreneur began making an impression on the urban businessmen who would ultimately come to know his reliability and integrity. (http://www.bernhardt.com/history.php)

Check out our Vintage Desk and Matching Chair by Bernhardt below. The desk is solid wood with oak veneer top and sides. The legs are also solid oak. This piece has three drawer. The bottom drawer can be used for filing and it even has a lock. The sliding doors work well. The pulls are brushed steel. The desk is finished on the back. The chair is in the McCobb style with a cane back made of solid oak. The set was made by Crawford of Jamestown for Bernhardt’s “Flair Division” in the mid 1950s. Since the back is finished, the desk can float and it will work well in any space small. The proportions are beautifully resolved and the design and construction are well done.

Just Roaming About

Merriam-Webster defines a nomad as an individual who roams about. I recently learned about an awe-inspiring hotel in New York City called The Nomad Hotel. I know that I would absolutely love to roam about in one the Nomad's thoughtfully designed and well-appointed rooms. The Nomad Hotel, located at 1170 Broadway and 28th Street was designed by French interior designer, Jacques Garcia. According to The Nomad Hotel's website, "The hotel is intended as a fresh take on the classic grand hotels of Europe with a distinct New York sensibility. The design of the hotel was inspired by the Parisian flat of Garcia’s youth. The 168 rooms are residential in feel and decorated in his classic, timeless style. Each room is appointed with hand-selected, richly textured custom-designed furnishings and original artwork. The soaring ceilings throughout the public spaces provide a fine gathering place to enjoy dining, drinking and socialize."

Check out some of our Nomad Hotel-inspired picks below that are all available to order at Weisshouse and visit our showroom to speak with one of our  talented designers. Feel free to roam about our website too at www.weisshouse.com.

Emerald: THE Color for 2013

Pantone has recently announced that Emerald is the 2013 Color of the Year. Expect to see emerald pop up everywhere this year! Emerald will be the upcoming year's hot color in fashion and home decor. There's even an iPhone case that features Pantone 17-5641 Emerald.

"Most often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones, the perception of Emerald is sophisticated and luxurious. Since antiquity, this luminous, magnificent hue has been the color of beauty and new life in many cultures and religions. Also the color of growth, renewal and prosperity, no other color conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity." - Pantone.com
