Can a Man Cave Be Stylish?

Stylish Man Caves may be rare but they can be had with a few simple rules. First, scale, scale and scale. Don't buy a too-large leather sectional and stuff it into the 10' x 10' room that your girlfriend has allotted you. Rather, choose a sleek, masculine sofa that's comfortable enough to watch a Steelers game on and impress your friends and family too. A rugged, wooden coffee table that's sturdy enough to also be a bench is ideal for pitchers of beer and fancy cocktails. Sports memorabilia and posters look great when professionally framed and not just tacked up on the wall. You aren't in college any longer! A little sophistication goes a long way. See some of our suggestions for your stylin' man cave below and visit www.weisshouse.com for more, manly design inspiration.

The Stylish Cherner Chair: Since 1958

Weisshouse is proud to carry Cherner Chairs. The original, now iconic molded plywood chair was designed by Norman Cherner and just happens to be a favorite design staple among clients and designers.

"Norman Cherner's furniture designs include the "multi-flex" modular storage system, the "Konwiser Line" of furniture and lighting, and molded plywood seating for Plycraft which he designed in 1958. The molded plywood ‘Cherner Chair' became his most recognized design and is found in furniture collections worldwide." (www.chernerchair.com)

Today, the Cherner legacy is carried on by Benjamin and Thomas Cherner. "After listening to countless requests from fellow Architects to see his father's designs reissued, Benjamin decided to join with his brother Thomas to form the Cherner Chair Company in 1999. Since then the Cherner Chair Company has brought back into production many of Norman Cherner's most popular designs. Utilizing his original drawings and specifications, the reissued designs are manufactured with the same attention to detail found in the original hand made classics. Cherner Chair products are now distributed through dealers worldwide." (www.chernerchair.com)

Just Arrived! Vintage Brutalism by Paul Evans

Famed designer, "Paul Evans studied metalwork, silver-and gold- smithing, sculpture and jewelry. In 1952, Evans moved to Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts to work as a "living craftsman" or essentially a silversmith who worked on the premises of the historical museum. A few years later, in 1955, Evans relocated to New Hope, Pennsylvania to produce the type of sculptured steel furniture that he is known for today." (www.primaveragallery.com)

According to Julie Iovine, who profiled Evans for the book Modern Americana: Studio Furniture from High Craft to High Glam, "his best pieces exhibit the tension between his personal visions as a sculptor and his honed instinct for new looks and techniques." (www.primaveragallery.com)

"Evans's work has become highly collectible within the last decade. Most of the pieces by Evans are signed and dated which makes it easy for collectors to place his work not just within the context of his own career but also in the scheme of the larger post-war American Crafts movement. Evans died of a heart attack in 1987, a day after he retired." (www.primaveragallery.com)

Weisshouse has just received several of Paul's pieces. Mid-century “Mosaic” Front 5 drawer chest/dresser (shown below) by famed Mid Century Modern designer Paul Evans for Lane Furniture Co. This piece is a stunning example of his distinctive Brutalist style. The piece is oak veneered with a solid wood carcass and composite material for the front with a 3” plinth. The veneer on the top and sides are beautifully matched to create a beautiful surface. The piece is in good conditions with minor wear. It will work in many different interiors because of its sculptural design.

Another Peek at the Weisshouse Designers

Often times, I will ask the readers of our blog, our Facebook fans and our clients what they would like to read about. In addition to design tips and new arrivals and trends, they want to know more about our designers. In past blogs, we have featured Stan, Betsy and Ron. We thought it would be great to re-visit some of the highlights from each of those interviews below.

Stan Adamik:

L: Is there anything that you would like prospective clients to know in regard to working with an interior designer?
S: Yes, it really helps to work with clients who are open and willing to hear and see suggestions. At first, they may not have thought of such suggestions. However, more often than not, ultimately they end up loving the ideas. The reason people seek interior designers to help them is because they cannot do it themselves and we are, in fact, professionals who have an infinite knowledge of furnishings and are not only trained in the history of furniture, but are also in the know in terms of everything new that is available for interiors.

Betsy Daily:

“I would say my personal style really involves listening to the client(s)…I feel that everyone has their own personal style and tastes and sometimes clients just need a little reassurance and guidance.”  Betsy enjoys integrating items that clients have some attachment to in order to reflect their personality into a space.  Betsy reiterated that LISTENING is the best design advice that she can offer other designers.  “I can only help to create the space…the clients have to live there!”
Ron Reinheimer:

L: Is there anything else that you wish to add about this project or the design process in general?

R: The Zitelli's (clients) are always a pleasure to work with. They are open to suggestions which really helps to move the design process along smoothly. As far as working with a designer, I find that it really helps people avoid expensive mistakes and saves a lot of time. When working with a designer for the first time, it's great if you (client) have a direction that you wish to head in and have an idea of the overall "look" that you want to achieve. My advice is to invest in great rugs and pieces of art that can be used again and again no matter what style of furniture you purchase over the years. Sofas and chairs come and go, but, investment pieces such as handmade rugs and art are around forever.

Weiss Shades of Grey

"As E L James' erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey is flying off bookstore shelves, shades of gray paint are rocking sales at hardware stores as well, making gray the most talked-about color of the summer (www.houz.com)".

In addition to gray paint, furniture and fabric in all shades of gray have been popping up everywhere. Why is gray so hot right now? Gray is the perfect neutral and works well with any color pallete. It's soothing and elegant. Like brown, gray is timeless and won't look dated any time soon. See some of our favorite furniture, accessories and art in various shades of gray below...
