What was the Memphis design movement? You may have heard about or even seen something that was referred to as "Memphis". While Memphis wasn't the most popular design movement ever, it certainly has its place in history. Founded by Ettore Sottsass in 1980, the name Memphis actually came from a Bob Dylan song, "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again". A reaction to 1970's minimalism, Memphis was conceived as a fad and a political statement that intended to rock the foundations of the design world. Additionally, its aim was to break down the barriers that existed between high and low class design. Today, Memphis pieces still exist and still inspire.
