As we kick of 2017, we have been hard at work adding new touches to the showroom floor despite the bustle of our Annual Sample Sale. New lighting elements are popping up in every corner, and we're excited to bring an exciting selection from some of our favorite contemporary designers.

During our most recent trip to High Point Market, we couldn't head home without picking up a few fixtures from Kelly Wearstler. Wearstler is a powerhouse of contemporary design, spearheading her brand with a mix of iconic elegance and eclectic details. We're eager to incorporate our new additions into client spaces. These bold, geometric forms carry just enough grit to compliment even the most bohemian spaces.

New York based designer Thomas O'Brien impressed us with sophisticated pendants that edged on vintage industrial style. We love the refined combination of an aged iron finish with the prismatic glass shade. Opt for a polished nickel finish for a more modern space.

Modernizing Historic Style | Paper Lanterns

New Old Light, Available at Weisshouse

The tradition of crafting paper lanterns began as far back as 230 BC in China. From their simplest form, a paper bag enclosing a candle, to complex frames covered with brightly colored silk, the lanterns have become symbols good fortune and joy for both Eastern and Western cultures.

For years, modern designers inspired by the craft have brought these traditions home. Akari Light Sculptures by Isamu Noguchi are considered icons of 1950s modernism. For half a century, Noguchi blended modern form with traditional Japanese handcraft with the original manufacturer in Gifu, Japan.

Designed by a team in Taiwan, the New Old Lamp emulates the traditional appearance of lanterns within a sleek, minimal frame. The frame contrasts the soft, airy lantern with a strong industrial shape that is uniquely modern.

Fashion designer Issey Miyake takes one step further into modernism with his IN-EI lamps for Artemide. The name translates to "shadow, shadiness, nuance" and are crafted from recycled polyester fiber. Each form was developed using a mathematical program based on three dimensional principles by Jun Mitani.

We cannot say this enough: the right lighting can totally transform a space. And a fun shape, color or unique lamp has dual functions as a light and a piece of art or sculpture. Issey Miyake Arrives at Weisshouse

Described as a sculpture of shadow and light, Artemide's new collection, IN-EI is just that. This collection, designed by Issey Miyake was co-developed and manufactured by Artemide and consists of free-standing and hanging light fixtures that are otherworldly. Now an Artemide "Selected Dealer", Weisshouse proudly introduces this collection in our Highland Avenue showroom to view and purchase. "Each lampshade is created using 2 or 3D mathematical principals, where light and shade harmoniously alternate. Miyake’s unique folding technology creates both statuesque forms as well as sufficient solidity." We invite you to stop by and experience the collection for yourself.

Clear Design Solutions: The Lucite Trend

One of our absolute favorite design publications, ELLE Decor recently held a fun contest via their Facebook page: "March Decorating Madness - Our 2013 Trend Tournament." While leopard, lace, floral, stripes, brass, neutral and neon all received votes, Lucite was the winner. Lucite has endured the test of time, first appearing in the 1930s and developed by DuPont. According to Apartment Therapy, "Lucite was commercially available by 1937, and the material was soon being used in various designs, from jewelry to handbags to furniture. One of the earliest and most famous suites of Lucite furniture was commissioned for Helena Rubinstein's New York City apartment. The suite was totally unique and almost comically glamorous — no surprise that it was designed by the artist Ladislas Medgyes, who was not only an interior decorator but also a stage designer who had started a school of stagecraft in Paris that helped promote a Surrealist aesthetic. Rubinstein's acrylic furniture was manufactured by Rohm and Haas (sometimes erroneously credited as "Roman Haas," but the company was actually named for a Mr. Rohm and Mr. Haas, both of whom were coincidentally named Otto) around 1939-1940."

Over Sized Lights Done Right

When we came across this photo on our Facebook News Feed, we were delighted to see these industrial lamps used as sconces in lieu of traditional table lamps. We love the monochromatic color scheme and reclaimed wood/weathered wood headboard too. You can recreate this look with a little help from Weisshouse. We have a pair of similar lamps in-stock (see photo) and several beds that can be special ordered like the one shown.

It's Furniture Fashion Week in PGH

In Honor of Memorial Day: Nautical Theme

Well, it's Memorial Day Weekend. In addition to parties & picnics, this is a time when we recognize the holiday originally called Decoration Day (ironic), a day of remembrance for those who have died serving our nation. Since this IS an interior design blog, we thought this would also be the perfect opportunity to focus on a hot, new design trend, Nautical.


There are lots of ways to pull a little nautical inspiration into your existing decor. It can be as subtle as framed, aged-looking or vintage prints of sea creatures, a porthole mirror or even an actual vintage ship or boat anchor! Your Comfy Nest: Part 1 - Planning
