High Chroma Hues | Designing With Color

We're as guilty as the next guy for falling for the clean profile of a charcoal grey sofa, but the first day of fall has jewel tones dancing in our heads. A beautiful interior comes together like pieces of a puzzle, finding harmony and balance as each piece plays off one another. We love creating full, layered looks that display our clients favorite pieces paired with new additions, and finding new ways to achieve a warm and cohesive space is always at the top of our list.
A recent project with an open floor plan challenged our team to create a holistic look through four connected living spaces. We grounded the space with this rich emerald velvet sofa from Italy. It achieves the perfect pairing of retro elegance and sophisticated style that is at the heart of Weisshouse's aesthetic, and helped to lay the groundwork for the rest of our color palette.

Don't be afraid to treat your sofa as if it were a piece of art. Whether you're building a bold color
story, or adding a burst of color to a neutral palette, opting for high chroma furniture is a great way to create a one-of-a-kind space.

LA Pride | Cisco Brothers Furniture

Weisshouse is dedicated to making sure our product lines reflect our own values: beauty, quality, and sustainability. We love to help our clients find antique rugs that will last for many lifetimes, or discover the perfect midcentury piece that has provided elegant storage for decades. When searching for modern upholstery that share these virtues, we were fortunate to partner with Cisco Brothers, a California based furniture company known for their attention to detail and their use of sustainable and organic materials.

This L.A. outfit brushed off the temptation to move production overseas to China, and has spent the last 25 years growing their business locally to build a sustainable community. Using green materials and building methods, including soy based foam and FSC certified domestic maple, their furniture is "as healthy for you as it is for the planet." Luckily for us, it's also pretty easy on the eyes! Read on to see why we're stuck on Cisco.

Fabulous Fabrics

During our recent trip to High Point market, we were excited to explore the new line of textiles launched by Cisco Brothers. Their collection of globally inspired textiles, designed by Creative Director Maurishka Pinedo, boast rich indigo hues and patterns inspired by world travels.

The vignettes Cisco created using these fabrics are rich and layered, marrying stylish frames with subdued  patterns to deliver a lush bohemian look. A selection of one of a kind pieces bring new life to vintage kilim rugs and make for incredible benches and chairs.

Smart Styling

Much like our own crew of designers, Maurishka Pinedo describes her showroom styling as "not very technical in the way that we design our space." Their High Point haven was sprinkled with reclaimed wood and incredible vintage accents. These details add warmth and history that you just won't find in mass-produced accessories.

Cisco Brothers instills true craftsmanship in every piece of furniture, and Weisshouse is eager to share the fruits of their labor to our Pittsburgh community. From one family-run business to another, visit Weisshouse to experience the art of these West Coast wonders.

5 Things Designers Want YOU To Know About Sofas

Inspired by an article published in House Beautiful Magazine, "50 Designer Tips and Secrets: Things You Need To Know About Sofas",we extracted our top five tips that we feel are most important when purchasing a sofa. Don't worry, there will be a part two!

1. "To establish calm, I upholster sofas in a solid that's the same color as the walls and curtains." - Barbara Barry

While a completely monochromatic approach may not always be your best bet, choosing a good, basic solid is. A sofa is an investment and one you'll own for many years if you choose quality.

2. "I like 80% down, 20% feathers in my sofa cushions. Though I prefer 100% down in the decorative pillows." - Suzanne Rheinstein

3. "If you have 8' ceilings, you'll want a low sofa, which gives the impression that the ceiling is taller than it is. In a room with a high ceiling, you want a high back sofa to be a weighty presence that can hold up the room." - David Easton

Okay, we love that one. Two basic principles of design are at work.

4. "On a sectional, always do a tight back instead of loose cushions. It will help keep the overall profile from becoming overwhelming. And keep the back fairly low - around 32". This will make the sectional feel a little less imposing."
 - Madeline Stuart

We couldn't agree more. There's nothing more unattractive than a big ol' sectional that overwhelms an otherwise well designed room.

5. "Cut a template from brown paper in the size of the sofa you're considering, place it on the floor, and see how it looks before you buy."
- Chandos Dodson Epley

While that's certainly a great idea, one of our designers would be happy to make sure the sofa you love will not only fit in your living room, but that it will also fit through your front door!

What's In Your Sofa?

Does the thought of shopping for a new sofa send shivers down your spine? We hope not, but if it does, keep reading. Last month, The New York Times featured a comparison of couches that was complete with a graphic that illuminated the construction between two sofas that are similar in style, but very different in terms of cost. The author, Steven Kurutz had this to say: "Maybe it’s a matter of optics. Take cars, for instance. Put a Porsche next to a Kia and it’s easy to spot the former’s superior design and engineering and understand (to some extent) its inflated price tag. But show me two sofas, at the low and high end of the market, and I can’t see much difference between the $700 couch at Bob’s Furniture Barn and the B&B Italia model that will set me back more than ten grand. Both look more or less like cushioned boxes. Barring gymnastic mistreatment, both will likely still be upright 20 years from now." Fortunately, Kurutz was set straight by Magnus Breitling, director of product management for the chair maker Emeco when he stated the following: “There’s a lot of intelligence that goes into the product, not just in construction but in sourcing. The effort and time is much higher than with a typical Macy’s or Ikea couch.”

You can read the complete article and view the top to bottom comparison here. At Weisshouse, we proudly represent some of the highest quality furniture manufacturers in business today. We have built our business in only representing vendors who build good products. As Stacy Weiss always says “Buy quality and buy it once”!

Pretty Spring Pastels at Weisshouse

This spring IS all about color, but it's not just bold, saturated color that's getting every one's attention. Pastels are just as fun and offer a more relaxed, subtle approach for adding little pops of color into your home this spring. A few of our favorites include the following pastel colors: yellow, green (we are loving mint this season), purple and turquoise. Mixing pastels with neutrals like dune and gray offers a tranquil escape for the eye.

Check out a few of our favorite pastels (pictured) and stop by our showroom or visit our website for even more design inspiration. As always, one of our interior designers will be happy to show you how to "work" spring's hottest trends and put them all together perfectly!

Weisshouse Chimes in on Global Design Trends

There are so many new design trends hitting the pages of magazines like Interior Design, Dwell, Architectural Digest and Lonny Mag for 2013. Some of these trends have even gone global. One of the hottest design trends to go global is "Minimalism". There are many creative ways to approach this trend without looking too institutional. One of the ways a minimal interior can be both soothing and simple and playful is to use hints of bright, beautiful color! Choose your main pieces (sofa, chairs, tables, lighting) in a crisp white or soft, natural linen and choose colors that speak to you to elevate your interior and add some personality with accessories. Colorful striped wall paper, bright pillows, artwork and painted focal walls are all effective in adding just the correct dose of color. We love how husband-and-wife team, Katarzyna and Tomasz Widawscy favor minimalist, white interiors but added pops of color to make their clients with two young children happy. Their clients asked that bright color figure prominently in the 970-square-foot Warsaw apartment. Check out the complete story here featured on www.interiordesign.net. Create your very own minimalist interior with the help of Weisshouse and our talented team of designers! Visit our Highland Avenue showroom during normal business hours or visit us at www.weisshouse.com 24 hours a day.
